Sudiksha Bahti and Women safety!

Today, I am writing this with a heavy heart and tears rolling down my eyes. What has happened to our Country, especially the men. How can people stoop so low? We may have passed many exams with high scores but we have failed in being humans. We have lost another India’s daughter today!

The death of a 20 year old Sudiksha Bahti, who died in a Bulandshahr in a road accident on Monday morning when she was riding on a motorcycle with her uncle, has shocked many of us. In 2018 Zee News showed her success story to the whole country. The demise of this young lady with a brilliant mind had received a scholarship of Rs 3.75 core from Babson College, Massachusetts. Her success story was a dream for many people who came from her background.

Sudiksha met with an accident while she was going to meet her relatives Shikandrabad. During her journey, she was eve teased by two men. The eve teasers were trying to overtake her bike and were performing stunts to impress her near her bike due to which her uncle was not able to drive smoothly. When the eve teasers suddenly hit the brake, her uncle could not handle the bike and both of them fell on the road. While her uncle survived, she could not as she fell headlong on the road which led to multiple injuries on her head. She died right on the spot. What was her mistake? Nothing. Many people in our society would have definitely blamed her and the reason is SHE IS A GIRL, so it's her fault.

Women safety has just become words! Infact, it has become a joke now. This is another slap on women safety, our government and our mentality. To be honest this is no new news anymore. We all are so used to complaining about this, but have no guts to bring change, neither in our system or in ourselves. The crime rates are increasing exponentially with increase in violence against women. I have heard about this constitution where all men and women have equal rights and have freedom from gender discrimination, are you sure that this exist? Oh right only in paper but not in our minds. Maybe that’s why there are multiple cases of rapes every day not only with women but also with kids. This is the country where Parvati Maa, Durga Maa, Saraswati Maa are worshipped as goddess ,on the other hand, women face violence such as eve-teasing, harassment, domestic violence, dowry and many more.  Reminder: Hypocrisy does exist!

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of which 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim (98% of the cases). The rape cases are not declining, in 2018, over 30,000 rape cases are reported, and only 1 in 4 convicted. Where Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have topped the list of states reporting the greatest number of acid attack and attempt to acid attack cases. The biggest example of a warrior is Laxmi Agarwal, who is an Indian acid attack survivor, a campaigner for the rights of acid attack victims. She was attacked in 2005 at the age of 16. She was approached by a family acquaintance, Naeem Khan, a man in his early thirties, whose romantic advances she did not respond to. He subsequently attacked her with acid.

Moreover, these are the cases that have been reported by the victim or the family members. There are so many cases due to the slow pace of operation of Indian judiciary is another major reason for the increasing women safety in India. The police of India is not efficient and not neutral and that is the reason why the cases of violence against women takes long time in the investigation phase. In the name of social pressure and shame many women did not come out and report the matter to police. This is one of the many reasons why the number of cases reported are less than the actual number of violence happening against women.

What really bothers me more is why are women given guidelines about what to do, what to wear, when not to go out. To all those people out there who say these things to their female members should keep in mind that their first job is to raise a man and teach them between wrong and right. Major problem lies over there itself. This leads to a Male dominated society. In order to improve women safety in India the first task is to improve the number of women in every sphere of society. Along with that the change in mindset of people is very essential for the safety of women. From family to educational institutions men should be taught about respecting females. Further, there should be fast-track courts to hear the cases and these cases should be investigated in a time bound manner. Only strict laws can not solve the problem of women safety in India rather the implementation of these laws in a time bound manner can solve the issue to a large extent.
