Give Your Heart a Break is a book written by Anuj Tiwari and published by Rupa Publications. I found this book really amazing because it was not a book of lovers but about the brother and sister bond. The main theme revolves around domestic violence and at the centre of the story is Addya, a cheerful girl who wished to fulfill all her dreams. But, as every Indian girl, she had to sacrifice all her dreams for her family and had to get married according to her family’s will. She started meeting the guy and she was charmed by his personality. The guy used to take care of her which made Addya believe that she found her prince charming. Eventually they got married and the first few weeks went happily but her happiness was short-lived as Bali, her husband’s true face was revealed. He used to tourture her, and asked for dowry. He made her life a living hell, until she left and went back to her parent’s home. The book shows how Addya overcame her struggles with the help of her brother.

This book is an eye opener and everyone must read it at least once. I agree that some arranged marriages are more successful than love ones, but dowry cases and domestic violence are mostly seen in arranged marriages. We see a lot of topics that are discussed on a regular basis but domestic violence is rarely discussed. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, about 20 people per minute are abused by their partners. In Fact it has been stated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will have experienced domestic violence. Domestic violence increases the rate of depression, eating disorders, anxiety, PTSD and Suicidal thoughts.

While men are likely to perpetuate domestic violence, it’s important to remember that they can be victims too. Not only physical but stalking, rape, financial abuse and verbal abuse are a form of domestic violence. The aim of any abuser is to take control and independence from the other. When you are in an abusive relationship, it can be hard to recognize the signs as many abusers are manipulative. They can easily dismiss their actions by showing affection right after incidents. For example, sending enormous bouquets of flowers right after the act or they would start feeling bad about it. The best thing an individual going through this can do is fight against all odds by over ruling them and to reach out to their loved ones. Don’t Ever take this as a small issue! Stay Calm and take action.

Well coming back to the book, I really enjoyed the brother- sister bond that is shown in the book. The way Addya’s brother supported her during her hard time is something which every sibling must learn from. Moreover, the way everybody helped Addya to see her own strengths is amazing. Our society needs more people like Addya and Agastya and books like this as well. Just go and read this book , you will never regret it.
